How to propagate a Sansevieria (Snake plant)
Propagate a Snake Plant in Water
It really is super simple to root Sansevieria in water. The process is as follows:
- Choose a healthy leaf.
- Cut off a snake plant leaf with sharp pair of scissors
- Place the cutting into the water, and leave the container in a warm place that receives plenty of indirect light.
- Allow your plant to root, and change the water every two days. Small roots should begin sprouting from the base of the cutting after a while.
- If your cutting has new root growth, move it from the water container to a new pot.
Choose a container with drainage holes to ensure the soil will drain well.
Propagate a Snake Plant in Soil
- Cut a single leaf from the original plant near the bottom using a pair of gardening shears or a sharp knife.
- Preparing to cut. Leave the cutting in a dry place for a day or two so that the cut end becomes callused. Use a rooting hormone on the cut end to encourage new growth.
- Plant the cutting Leaf in the soil. Plant your cutting leaf over in a small pot filled with a good soil mix made of coarse sand or peat moss and water it immediately. Your cutting should develop roots within a couple of weeks.
- Watch for growth. New leaves indicate that your cutting has made its root system. You can also gently tug on the baby plant to check whether the roots have developed.
Care
Water – You need to be careful not to overdo it because your plant will rot out. Always take care if the soil is almost parched before thoroughly watering again. Water your Snake Plants every 2-5 weeks, depending on your area temperature, light levels, and humidity.
Light – Even though Sansevieria needs low to medium light, they’ll also tolerate high light. Just be sure to keep them out of the direct sunlight because they’ll burn.
Air Circulation – These plants can live with the dry or stale air in our homes and offices. They’ll also liv e well in bathrooms where the humidity is much higher.
Temperature – Sansevieria will live in a wide range of temperatures in our homes. they can bear very hot weather in the summer and cool weather in the winter. they don’t live in frost or snow so get in indoors before the temperatures drop too low.
